Hi, I’m Richard (he, him, his),

Training and Approach

I was originally trained as a psychoanalyst, moved on to training in CBT and became a certified schema therapist. I work by briefly learning about your family history and childhood to gain a sense of how your past informs your current coping skills for dealing with emotional needs. I will guide you through practical exercises and skills building to develop new coping skills. My self-help book, Your Coping Skills Aren’t Working, presents an in-depth approach to how I work with my clients.

Mindfulness Meditation and My Approach

I strive to practice anti-oppressive, decolonized psychotherapy, following an engaged Buddhism inspiration. In my therapy work, I incorporate mindfulness meditation as a practice of daily self-compassion. I also use imagery re-scripting (ImRs) as a part of meditation, as a way of imagining an image of a part of the self, such as our inner child, and how we can offer care to them. While the mental health field has technical language for it, Thich Nhat Hanh uses similar tools with the Plum Village Tradition and meditation.
