Feeling Body, Emotion Mind: Applying the Latest Affect Neuroscience to Mindfulness & Psychotherapy
with Brian Shiers, LMFT
When it comes to cognition, the use of language and context helps us precisely navigate how we think about ourselves and make sense of the world. Emotions, however, are not so clear-cut. Though a vital and compelling aspect of our individual experiences and the subject of over a hundred years or more of research, there is still fiery debate about what emotions are, why they matter, and how to recognize them – and change them – in ourselves.
In this experiential workshop, psychotherapist and mindfulness teacher, Brian Shiers LMFT, will review the seminal research of Dr. Lisa Feldman Barrett, a University Distinguished Professor of Psychology at Northeastern University and author of the book, How Emotions Are Made, whose decades-long work powerfully challenges foundational beliefs about emotion that have potentially serious consequences for not only our individual wellbeing, but the health of our judicial system and the future applications of AI.
Brian Shiers LMFT (https://www.alignedmindtherapy.com/ ) is a licensed marriage and family therapist in private practice in California specializing in treating anxiety disorders and major depressive disorder using mindfulness-based interventions informed by attachment psychology, as well as ketamine-assisted psychotherapy. He is a senior mindfulness instructor at UCLA Mindful, and teaches the UC San Francisco Center for Mindfulness in Surgery’s Enhanced Stress Resilience Training to first-year surgery interns at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine. In February, 2025, he will partner with UCLA Health to deliver the first comprehensive mindfulness training to the Santa Monica Police Department.
