“Admirable friendship, admirable companionship, admirable camaraderie is actually the whole of the holy life.”
– Upaddha Sutta, Samyutta Nikaya 45.2 (trans. Thanissaro Bhikkhu)
Social connection is fundamental to human wellbeing. For those living with major mental illness a lack of connection can be exacerbated by stigma, shame, and an absence of systemic support. Therapeutic communities offer refuge.
In this evening discussion with Doug Baker, Tim Little will draw upon a decade of clinical practice in long-term psychiatric day treatment to share insights into the role of community in the process of healing and recovery.
Participants will:
- Review what distinguishes psychiatric day treatment from other types of therapeutic communities
- Understand how mindfulness and meditation can be integrated into psychiatric day treatment
- Explore gratitude as a vehicle for the cultivation of personal well-being and social connection
Tim is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with 10 years’ clinical experience providing group and individual therapy in psychiatric day treatment settings. His professional interests include addiction recovery, the mental health applications of contemplative practices, and the development of social and emotional skills in adult learners. He is especially focused on psycho-educational approaches that integrate meditation and psychotherapy as a resource for personal and social well-being.
